3 Questions to Ask When Buying a New Car

Three Things to Look for When Test Driving Cars

If you’re in the market for a new car, a test drive is an essential part of the shopping process. But, do you know exactly what to look for when test driving cars to choose the right model for your needs? Even if you plan to buy the car online, you should still test drive the car or a similar model to understand how it handles on the road. Consider these three factors the next time you visit the dealership.

Before you test drive the car

When shopping for a new or used vehicle, do your homework using the Internet and buyer’s guides before visiting the dealership. Consider what type of vehicle best fits your needs – from size and style to safety ratings and price. Make a list of must-have features, such as side airbags, anti-lock brakes, or an electronic stability control system. When you get to the dealership, only look at the models that closely match your budget and must-have list.

During the test drive
Matt Greenberg, general manager of Bedford Nissan in Bedford, Ohio, recommends you keep the following in mind when you test drive a car:

  1. Comfort – Are the seats comfortable? Can you adjust the driver’s seat to the height you need? Is the steering wheel adjustable? Choose a car with seats you’re comfortable in for at least a 30-45 minute drive.

  2. Ease of Use – Check to see how easy the gauges are to read, and if you can easily use the controls on the dashboard without taking your eyes off the road. Check all controls, such as the air conditioning, heat, headlights, and windshield wipers.

  3. Handling – How does the car handle as you drive? Greenberg also recommends asking your sales person to bring out the exact model you want when you’re ready to test drive. Or, if you plan on buying a used car the dealership doesn’t have in stock, request to drive the same models that are a year older and newer to compare. You get a better overall feel for the car you’d be buying – whether it includes a sunroof, automatic or manual transmission, leather interior, etc.

When test driving the car, take it out on a variety of roads – don’t settle for a quick drive down the street. If you do a lot of highway driving, test drive the car on a highway. Also, take the car on a bumpy road to put its handling to the test. Finally, don’t be afraid of test driving the car in inclement weather. According to Greenberg, this is one of the best times to test drive so you can see how the car will handle in conditions, such as snow. He also recommends all eligible drivers in your household test drive the car to ensure they’re comfortable with it.

Knowing what to look for when test driving cars can help you make the right purchasing decision for your specific needs. Find out how much your new car investment is going to change your current car insurance payment and remember to consider that in your overall car budget. You can quickly compare insurance quotes to find affordable rates from some of the best auto insurance companies.
