The
International Car of the Year Awards
How Cars Reflect Our Lifestyle
Presented
with the flair of a true Hollywood production,
the ICOTY Awards honor the top two new year models as the International Car of the Year and International Truck of the Year.
From the most innovative features to the most ecologically aware, nominees include vehicles that are manufactured
by American, British, German, Japanese,
Korean and Swedish automakers but are sold in the United States.

"The
ICOTY Awards are about the emotional
relationship people have with
their cars; a reflection about
who and where we are in life and
how our cars make us feel."
|
Launched
in 1997 at the North American International
Auto Show, the ICOTY Awards became the
first automotive awards show to honor new vehicles
based on the emotional connection between
car and consumer. Today, the ICOTY Awards have evolved and honor vehicles based on lifestyle compatibility and how well automakers achieve that goal.
"The ICOTY
Awards are not about power and performance,
but rather about personality and passion," said ICOTY Executive Producer Courtney
Caldwell.
Inaugural EARTH, WIND & POWER AWARDS
to Debut at ICOTY 2009
The 2009 ceremony will debut the Earth, Wind & Power (EWP) Awards, which will honor the Most Environmentally-Friendly Car and Truck of the Year. The mission of the EWP Awards is to recognize vehicles that are driven by a power source that help reduce global warming, are conducive to promoting a cleaner environment and support the mission to achieve energy independence through alternative sources.
With global warming and concerns about dependence of foreign oil becoming more mainstream today, more and more people are turning to fuel-efficient or alternative fuel vehicles,” said Caldwell. “It’s become of vital interest to consumers, automakers, and the future of our planet to produce vehicles that are compatible with our environment.”
In
order to achieve a balanced perspective
that reflects all consumers, ICOTY engages
a diverse group of renowned automotive
journalists and editors in the voting
process. The ICOTY Jury consists of
17 reputable writers and editors
who represent respected publications
such as MSN Autos, Forbesautos.com, Edmunds.com, Consumer Guide Automotive,
Yahoo! Autos, Auto Week, and Autoline
Detroit, to name a few. Voting ballots
are then sent to J.D. Power and Associates
for final tabulation to ensure accuracy and credibility.
The
ICOTY Awards attract more than 600
industry executives, political figures,
business leaders and media, garnering
significant press coverage. Today, ICOTY
is the largest, most professionally
produced auto awards show in the industry,
an event which has been coined by industry
leaders as the Academy Awards of Cars.
The
criteria on which votes are cast can
be found in the ICOTY AWARDS archive
section under 'Awards Criteria.' Each
vehicle must be of in-production models of the new year.
Other
awards presented during the ICOTY show
include a Lifetime Legend Award
presented to a veteran automotive journalist, the EARTH
ANGEL Award which is presented
to the most environmentally friendly
automaker of the year, debuting in 2008 the award was an industry
first.
