ROAD & TRAVEL's 2002 International Car of the Year Awards
The Best and the Brightest
by B.J. Killeen

Being chosen as one of the winners of RTM's Class of 2002 is an honor that goes beyond regular automotive awards because of the criteria we use to select the vehicles. Our awards are not based only on top speed or 0-60-mph times, but on real-world usage and practical applications as well. Therefore, the winners of this year's Class of 2002 should feel extra proud, since we have selected these vehicles because they excel in categories like "Safe and Dependable," and "Fun Factor," as well as performance. We are all aware that our vehicles are an extension of ourselves, and we know what we like and what we want. The winners this year are what many of us like and, judging by their popularity in the marketplace, what many consumers want. Congratulations to the honorees, and we thank the manufacturers for listening and responding to our desires for automotive excellence.

Car of the Year
Most Likely to Succeed - Jaguar X-Type

ROAD & TRAVEL's 2002 Most Likely to Succeed -- Jaguar X-TypeWhen you say the name Jaguar, the word success always follows. Those who have made it know that there are few rewards more satisfying that Jaguar ownership. From the exceptional ride to the spellbinding exterior design to the enticing smell of the leather interior, a Jaguar is it. The new X-Type is our class valedictorian by virtue of its impressive ride and handling qualities, as well as its ability to provide safety through a new all-wheel drive system. With two engine choices, a spacious interior, standard luxury features like power windows, cruise control, and remote keyless entry, it's easy to see why this vehicle is setting sales records.

The X-type without question is one of the most significant models in Jaguar's rich history. As its first compact sport sedan in more than three decades, the X-Type is designed to build on the Jaguar nameplate, as well as provide a good value to those entering the luxury segment of the marketplace. Our judges chose the X-Type over other deserving entries like the BMW 745i and Ford Thunderbird by virtue of its ability to reach the masses, while proving that hard work results in exceptional rewards.
