Welcome to the 2009 International Car of the Year Awards (ICOTY) section, where information surrounding the black-tie gala can be found. Coined the "Academy Awards of Cars" by industry leaders, the 13th annual ceremony was held January 10, 2009 at the MGM Grand Detroit.
The 2009 event was the stage for the exciting debut of the Earth, Wind & Power (EWP) Awards, which honored the most environmentally-friendly car and truck of the year. The mission of the these awards is to recognize vehicles that are driven by a power source that help reduce global warming, are conducive to promoting a cleaner environment and support the mission to achieve energy independence through alternative sources. The second annual Earth Angel Award was also presented recognizing Honda Motor Company as the most environmentally-progressive automaker.
Each year’s winners are selected by the ICOTY Jury, a group of nationally renowned automotive journalists and editors from a variety of auto magazines, whose expertise and publications are highly regarded by automakers. Warren Brown, auto columnist for The Washington Post was honored with the sixth annual Lifetime Legend Award. This award honors a veteran automotive journalist for their outstanding contributions to the industry.
