Get Packing For Your Cruise

The less you pack, the more space you'll have for souvenirs. AAA offers some suitcase-slimming suggestions.

Before you pack:

  • Avoid duplication. Inquire about shipboard amenities -- laundry services, self-serve laundry, irons and ironing boards. Ask whether an adaptor will be necessary for your blow dryer, razor and other electrical appliances.

  • Use clothing you have. Consider separates. Mix and match your wardrobe in a complimentary color palette. Accessorize with scarves and costume jewelry.

  • Pack economically. Consider one outfit for every two and one-half days of travel. Easy-care, wrinkle-free fabrics allow maximum flexibility.

  • Beat port mark-ups. Travel with sample size toiletries, sunscreen, disposable razors, single-use cameras, travel stain-remover pads and hand wash detergent. Pack a travel alarm and binoculars.

  • Inquire about excursion equipment. Chances are tour operators will provide snorkels for your dip in the Caribbean or, in colder climates, moon boots for a glacier trek.

  • Dress casually for warm weather days. Appropriate dress for women includes sundresses, walking-shorts or lightweight slacks and blouses. Men should choose sport or polo shirts, and walking shorts or lightweight pants. Cut-offs and provocative clothing should be avoided. Select low-heeled shoes and sandals. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

  • Dress comfortably for casual evenings. A dress or pantsuit with dress sandals is suitable for women. Men are properly dressed in a sport shirt and slacks.

  • Select something special for semi-formal events. Women will find a dress or pantsuit appropriate for a nice restaurant at home will be a good choice onboard. Men are expected to wear a jacket and tie.

  • Choose your best for formal evenings. A cocktail dress, evening gown or evening pants, dress blouse and tunic are appropriate evening wear for women. A dark suit, dinner jacket or tuxedo is clothing-of-choice for male guests.

  • Make adjustments for colder weather. Dress in layers. Depending on temperature, choose medium to heavy weight pants, sweaters, blazers, and a light to medium jacket or all-weather coat. Consider light thermal underwear. Pack a waterproof windbreaker, hat and gloves.

Most cruise lines will offer guidelines for appropriate dress. Consult your brochure for more detailed information.
