2008 Infiniti EX35

Infiniti has a word for some of its designs of late: "Seductive." It could add "bold,""dominating" and "technology-laden" as well.

Derived from the sultry-looking G35 sport sedan, its newest EX35 bears the same kind of classy chassis, smoothly rounded body and well-planted stance, although in a taller crossover version with a rear hatchback spoiler.

In meeting the demand for a carlike utility vehicle, Infiniti made sure it had something extra to attract a crowd. With EX35, it's a wealth of high technology functions and electronic amenities that set it apart from average, such as a kind of dual electronic "buddy system" to keep watch over vehicle and driver.

One is an Around View Monitor, or AVM. As the name implies, it has four tiny cameras at the front, rear and sides that give a top-down view of what's going on outside. This can make parking easy, eliminating those pesky and sometimes dangerous blind spots that could hide a playing child.

Another is Infiniti's Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) system designed to keep a vehicle from drifting into another land and to aid the driver with corrective assistance if it happens. The system's camera "reads" road lane markers and calculates a drift situation if turn indicators aren't activated. Gentle, automatic braking at the appropriate tire location assists the driver by acting to keep the drift from continuing as the driver is alerted to the situation with a warning.

While those measures stress the safety and future tech place of the EX35, Infiniti hasn't forgotten the basics. Like other Infiniti vehicles, there's very much a driver's edge in the same 3.5-liter, approximately 290-horsepower V-6 engine that powers the G35 sedan. The five-speed automatic has the obligatory manual mode function with sport mode function and adaptive shift control. Its exterior has "Scratch Shield," a self-healing paint.

Four models, in rear or all-wheel drive for the EX35 and EX35 Journey, are based from $31,300 to $36,250 for the upscale Journey trim. Fuel economy is expected to be about 17 city/24 hwy or 16 city/24 hwy for the AWD model.
