2008 Mazda CX-9
Think of transporting seven people and what comes to mind? Maybe an oversized SUV. Or a much-maligned minivan of sliding side door/low load floor/slightly bloated appearance fame.

2008 Mazda CX-9 Interior |
Well, Mazda has another option: Its CX-9 full-size crossover. And it's been so well received it garnered more than a few awards as a newcomer last year. How to top that? Already claiming to put the "zoom zoom" back into driving, Mazda wasn't about to rest on its powertrain laurels. For 2008, there's a new 3.7-liter, 273-horsepower V-6 the car maker touts for "sparkling" acceleration and passing, even with regular fuel.
Front drive on the CX-9 is standard. So is the six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode for more driver control that keeps playtime intact. An optional Active Torque Split All-Wheel-Drive system senses road slippage and steering angle among driving characteristics during loss of traction or "performance" driving.
Pair that aptitude for spiking the fun quotient with the CX-9's look, and its evident this is no ho-hum mobile. Arched wheel wells have a "bikiini cut" look, suggesting a good dose of sex appeal. Its overall lines have a supple, almost molded look. A side window line tapering upward above haunchy rear fenders and a funky rear spoiler add a look of motion when standing still.
If driving verve gets out of control, there are disk brakes at all four corners to rein it in. A panic braking assist helps restore order without an accident; an advanced airbag system plus a side rollover curtain is there if one can't be avoided.
A car with that much pizzazz should have high tech amenities such as DVD and navigation system, and CX-9 does -- if one doesn't mind boosting the cost above an entry price just under $30 K. Best mileage (front drive) is 18 city/24 hwy. So even a family with a passel of kids can enjoy a zoom zoom kinda ride. |
