2008 Suzuki SX4

TIf you're going to play with the big boys, you might as well make sure you're noticed. For Suzuki, showing off its SX4 Crossover at the lower end of an increasingly crowded landscape, there had to be something to catch folks' attention. The answer, in addition to a funky, trendy Italian exterior design and sassy interior, was its presence as the least expensive all-wheel-drive vehicle of any kind on the market in the U.S. Needless to say, it got noticed.

A sophomore on the crossover landscape, the SX4 Crossover adds some minor changes for 2008. A rear spoiler is available this year as are new sport pedals and Bluetooth connectivity. There are new colors, plus revised gearing for the five-speed manual transmission designed to improve performance and fuel efficiency. A four-speed automatic is also available. An upmodel Touring edition adds standard electronic stability control (ESP). All three trim levels (base, Convenience and Touring) have standard keyless entry and start. The optional exterior colors include Black Pearl Metallic and Vivid Red.

The five-seater, five-door SX4 Crossover had an award-winning American inauguration last year. With car-like unibody construction, it was fine tuned for ride and performance handling in Europe before the vehicle was imported into the U.S. With its 2.0-liter four producing 143-HP, its 21/28 best fuel economy is one reason it's been recognized as a best commuter car. And while it doesn't have the height of some crossover vehicles, its tapered roofline and wide stance give it the appearance of a solidly-anchored wagon. Sporty roof rails and fog lamps add pizzazz.

At a $15,270 base price, Suzuki touts the SX4 Crossover for its intelligent all-wheel-drive (i-AWD) system that can be adjusted by a driver activated switch for fuel-saving front drive mode at lower speeds. Above 36 miles an hour, the system kicks in for smooth cruising. The SX4 Crossover could gain international attention for other reasons as well. It's the vehicle Suzuki is using in its World Rally Championship racing effort.
