Greensboro's New Green Hotel

Greensboro, North Carolina's Sustainable Proximity Hotel

The seed was planted on April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day. On that day, North Carolina Hotelier Dennis Quaintance, only an eighth-grader in Darby, Montana, was introduced to the notion of sustainable practices. From the seed that took root in that Bitterroot Valley town, the Proximity Hotel rises in Greensboro, North Carolina and aims to be the most sustainable hotel in North America when it opens this Fall. The 147-room hotel will introduce impressive progress for the hotel industry by setting precedents in energy and water use efficiencies, without sacrificing one iota of guest comfort. In fact, Proximity's guests will enjoy every comfort from guestrooms with 10-foot high ceilings to extraordinary custom-designed furnishings and loads of natural light and fresh air.

Some of the innovations that the new and "green" Proximity Hotel will employinclude:

  • Architectural concept influenced by adaptive reuse, an eight-story building was erected to mimic a 1930s cut-and-sew factory and “adapted” for a hotel and restaurant.

  • One hundred rooftop solar panels, covering 4,000 square feet, to heat hot water—enough energy to provide hot water for 100 average households.

  • North America ’s first installation of the Otis Gen2 elevator which will generate electricity as the cab descends by using a regenerative drive.

  • Use of 40% less energy and 35% less water than a comparable hotel, by using ultra efficient materials, systems and the latest in construction technology.

  • A vegetated "green" roof atop the restaurant to reduce the urban heat island effect and filter rainwater runoff.

  • Improved air quality by efficiently circulating large amounts of outside air into guestrooms and employing energy recovery technology, tempering the air exhausted from the hotel.

  • Recycled materials that comprise about 10% of the building materials, including concrete that contains 4% fly ash (a coal combustion product).

  • Recycling 75% of the construction waste.

Central to Proximity’s mission are not only values that support sustainable practices, but this outfit is equally passionate about providing extraordinary guest comfort. "Every part of Proximity’s design process and each eco-friendly practice put in place are about conservation, but never about deprivation," says Quaintance, CEO of Quaintance-Weaver. "Our guests deserve gracious hospitality and luxury, and they will get it!"

Like it's sister hotel, the AAA Four Diamond rated O.Henry, Proximity will be a community-based hotel. Although serving the traveling public, these hotels are close to where people live, and offer the opportunity to serve their neighbors as well, becoming the center of the community life and a source of pride for the city. From using local architectural influences to displaying local art, the hotel will be in and of the community. It's even named after the Proximity Manufacturing Cotton Mill, which is central to Greensboro's history.

Proximity’s 147 guest rooms will include ten suites and showcase mindful design with 50 square-foot windows and custom classic-modern furnishings. With a vibrant bistro, two event spaces featuring picturesque vistas, a fitness studio, and London taxi service for guest transportation, the hotel plans to leave no stone unturned with its innovative hospitality practices. The mission to incorporate nature will also bring guests outside to the property’s 2.5-acre natural area by the restored banks of the nearby stream. Here they can enjoy an al fresco lunch with local food, then head to the nearby five-mile greenway for a bike ride on bicycles provided by the hotel.
