Giving Needy Dogs A Lift

Coastal Pet Rescue Founder Rewarded
for Her 'Heart on Wheels'

Lisa Scarbrough has always gone out of her way to help an animal in need. The 26-year-old founder of Coastal Pet Rescue, an all-volunteer non-profit organization that primarily serves coastal Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, recently won the national Jiffy Lube® Hearts on Wheels contest for her extraordinary community service using her vehicle.

The contest prize, a 20-year supply of Jiffy Lube Signature Service® oil changes, $150 Shell gasoline gift card, five-year supply of Rain-X® Weatherbeater® wiper blades, Rain-X® Original Glass Treatment and Rain-X® Glass Cleaner, and six-year supply of Fix-A-Flat® tire inflator, will help her continue to provide safe homes for displaced animals.

"It's not uncommon for Lisa to drive six to eight hours, one way, to rescue an animal that's in danger of being euthanized," said Tom Kaufman, a fellow volunteer at Coastal Pet Rescue.

Scarbrough's "rescue-mobile," a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XLS, is Coastal Pet Rescue's primary vehicle for transporting needy animals to vet visits and foster homes. Scarbrough pays for all of its routine maintenance, gas and insurance out of her own pocket.

"Lisa's devotion and commitment to saving animals truly made her Hearts on Wheels entry stand out," said Jiffy Lube Global Director of Marketing Lisa Carlson. "We were overwhelmed to learn the stories of so many volunteers who regularly give of themselves and their vehicles in service to their communities."

A foster mom to injured and homeless pets for much of her life, Scarbrough founded Coastal Pet Rescue on her 24th birthday in 2003. In 2004, the organization logged more than 8,000 miles rescuing more than 70 dogs and cats across the Southeast. Round-trip transports average approximately 200 miles.

Despite yearly fundraisers, Coastal Pet Rescue has not yet broken even, Scarborough said. "None of our volunteers receives any compensation. We all pay for our own gas and vehicle upkeep. I'm planning to share the Jiffy Lube prize package with them. It will really help keep us going."

Jiffy Lube International sponsored the Jiffy Lube Hearts on Wheels contest to recognize and reward the positive contributions individuals quietly make in their communities every day. Automotive expert Lauren Fix, a.k.a. the Car Coach®, worked with Jiffy Lube to find these unsung heroes.

"Whether you're traveling the highways rescuing dogs and cats, commuting back and forth to work every day or running errands around town, it all takes its toll on your vehicle," Fix said. "Regular oil changes and preventive maintenance can extend vehicle life, improve gas mileage and keep you on the road worry-free."
