The original H1 Hummer, a civilized version of the military High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or Hum-Vee, came from Hummer's parent company, AM General. But General Motors has marketing rights to the Hummer label and at GM's Hummer Division, junior versions have spawned from H1 Alpha. Hummer's '07 line encompasses the H2 SUV and SUT (sport-utility truck), plus reduced-size H3. Special editions work for both.

The H3 SUV looks like a whittled and honed H2. It's a mid-size model one step down in size from the H2. For 2007 the H3 earns a new engine -- a 3.7-liter in-line-five that makes 242 hp through a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic. The electronically controlled 4WD system has a two-speed transfer case with locking differentials center and rear. For safety, StabiliTrak skid controls, OnStar telecommunications and curtain-style air bags are aboard. New model H3X looks custom with chrome tube steps, roof crossbows and a brush guard outside and a Monsoon sound system inside.
