TOYOTA TRUCK NEW MODEL GUIDE
Toyota
builds two trucks inside its United States
factories. The Tacoma series, produced
at Toyota's California manufacturing facility,
comes with three cab sizes, two powertrain
choices and options for rear-wheel-drive
(RWD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) traction.
The Tundra, assembled inside Toyota's
Indiana and Texas plants, goes head-to-head
against its full-size domestic counterparts
with a variety of cab and powertrain choices.
Tundra
Toyota's biggest truck grew in size last
year, with a home-grown effort aimed at
America's full-size truck market. The
Tundra repeats its performance in 2008,
with three cab configurations and three
powertrain choices including a 5.7-liter
V8 rated at 381 horsepower. There are
as many as 31 different models available
through the Tundra's three trims, all
with RWD or 4WD traction options. The
vehicle safety features aboard the Tundra
include an anti-lock brake system (ABS),
electronic brake distribution (EBD) and
electronic brake assist (EBA). The cabs
available include the regular cab, Access
Cab and Double Cab, whic work with the
entry-level DL, well-equipped SR5 and
top-tier Limited trims.
Tacoma
Toyota reinvented its best-selling, compact
pickup in 2005, and extends the Tacoma
series this year with fresh interior features
like large seats and a two-tone instrument
panel. The Tacoma offers three cab styles
in the two-door regular cab, extended
Access Cab and four-door Double Cab. A
2.7-liter, four-cylinder engine worth
159 horsepower is standard for the Tacoma,
but a 4.0-liter V6 for 236 horsepower
is also available. Both RWD and 4WD versions
are offered, as are special editions like
the PreRunner and X-Runner. The Prerunner
with RWD traction has the look of a customized
4WD truck, while the X-Runner is a swoopy,
ground-hugging performance truck.
